American Government: Topical Research Paper
Mr. Anderson(You need to follow these for full credit!)
The research topics can be chosen either from the list below or you can conference with me (Mr. Anderson) on a topic of your own. You will need to select two (2) of the following topics questions to write on. Follow the parameters below for a chance at maximum points. These papers will be due to me either in person or digitally
The topics list (choose two)
1. Why or why not, do you think that the concept of “due process”, as stated in the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, is an idea that should be protected?
2. If you could add an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution what would it be? Write it up, tell me why you want it and give referenced proof of what it is you’re going to change. Try to also show how this would impact both sides in a debate on the amendment
3. The “1st amendment” of the constitution is considered one of the most important of the protections afforded to U.S. citizens. Tell me why those particular rights are important to you as well as how they impact your daily life. Back up your opinion with references.
4. The idea of “Free Speech” being protected at all costs is very important to many people. There have been cases where a person still must help to protect free speech even when that speech may be very painful or inflammatory to them. Please show me two (2) examples where this has happened. You may also cite examples of what you would consider inappropriate language or not.
5. The idea of impeachment, term limits and/or voting a current office holder “Out” has been in the news lately. Do you think that as an idea they are legal or not? If they are in place, what should their limits be?
Grade scale:
50 points: Covers the topic completely, has a clear thesis, ties information together into a coherent discussion and uses correct citation for outside sources. Spelling, setup and grammar are 90% or better.
40 points: Is missing some part of the discussion topic, is not as clear as possible in the thesis, does not tie into subject clearly and may not have complete citation. Spelling, setup and Grammar are 80% to 90% correct.
